We started our adventure in August, when 4 of us girls took a flight to Marseille. Once we arrived at the airport we were picked up by Nicole from Vintage Road Trips, who took us to Aix-en-Provence. We were given a warm welcome there and they informed us about the campervan while we enjoyed a drink. We wanted to keep our trip nice and spontaneous and we had absolutely no idea what our route would end up looking like. Fortunately, Mark lent us a helping hand and booked our first campsite, in Beaurecueil. After that it was a matter of loading up and putting the pedal to the metal!
Tough as we were, we wanted to go without navigation and do things the old-fashioned way: navigating with a map. That didn't go quite smoothly, and after having seen pretty much all of Aix-en-Provence, we finally ended up at the campsite. The van attracted quite a bit of attention once we arrived at the campsite, and unfortunately even more so when it refused to start. Fortunately, some strong men immediately came to help us out and managed to get us to our spot. We went to the centre of le Tholonet on foot to get a bite to eat, but we never made it there because we came by a birthday party along the way, to which we were promptly invited. What followed was a great evening with the locals, and watching shooting stars. Our wish (for the van to start again) was granted, because Mark fixed it up the next morning and we could resume our adventure, in the direction of Lac de Sainte-Croix. We thoroughly enjoyed the environment and paid a visit to Brignoles and Baudinars sur Verdon along the way for lunch and a drink. We spent 2 days at a campsite in the Lac de Sainte-Croix area. After the first night we drove around the lake and visited the picturesque Moustiers Sante-Marie, a very nice place to walk around in! After that we went to the Georges du Verdon and ended the day with a refreshing swim in the Lac de Sainte-Croix. The campervan occasionally struggled on this route, but going uphill went fine so long as we stayed in first gear.
The next day, Avignon was part of the programme. There we found a campsite overlooking the city; we ended the day with cocktails and sightseeing in Avignon. The following day we first went to Chartreuse, where we visited a convent and one of the 100 most beautiful gardens in France. After that we went to les Beaux, which was highly recommended according to our travel guide. It was so crowded and hot, however, that we quickly moved on to Salon-de-Provence. We spent the night at the campsite there, but the language barrier unfortunately put a stop to our attempts at participating in a French quiz. After having done a lot of sightseeing in the heat, we were in desperate need of the beach and relaxation. The next day we headed in the direction of Cassis, but we were unable to find a campsite with vacant places so we ended up in Sainte-Cyr-sur-Mer. There we were at a campsite by the beach, where we managed to wind down wonderfully. At night we wanted to explore Bandol's night life, and we ended up in a karaoke bar where English pop songs were interspersed with French chansons. Once again we were invited to a party out of the blue, but the party was a bit disappointing, unfortunately. The next day was already our last one and we headed in the direction of Aix-en-Provence. Here we had a delicious dinner and we received a personal tour from one of the locals whom we had met on the first night. It was an incredibly lovely last night.
The next morning we had to head towards the Vintage Road Trips grounds early, and after getting ourselves some croissants the van wouldn't start. It was a bit stressful, but the camper soon decided to give it another go and we were able to return it on time. We were welcomed with coffee and were properly dropped off at the airport.
All in all it was a great trip! We saw a great deal and we really enjoyed the beautiful scenery. The camper attracted quite a bit of attention and we received a lot of great comments, both on the road and at times when we stopped. The camper, the weather, the scenery, everything was just right! We enjoyed a very memorable holiday and regularly think back on it with fond memories!
